History

The roots of the Koç University School of Nursing (KUSON) go back to the Admiral Bristol School of Nursing, the first private foreign health education institution in Turkey, which was established in 1920 and supported by the United States Government until 1957. In 1976, it was certified as a four-year vocational program by the Turkish Education and Health Ministires, to be later named as Admiral Bristol Nursing Vocational High School.

The School was incorporated in the Vehbi Koç Foundation in 1995- founded by Ms. Semahat Arsel who has made vital contributions to the development of the profession of nursing in Turkey- and joined Koç University as the School of Health in the academic year 1998-1999. The curriculum of the school was developed with the support of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and after that time KUSON started to give Baccaluarate degree in nursing. In 2005, it was renamed as the School of Nursing by a decree of the Council of Ministers, and in 2016, the School of Nursing was decommissioned, continuing to serve as the “College” of Nursing.

KUSON is located at the Health Sciences Campus in Topkapı. In its modern building, the School of Nursing makes education much more effective, convenient and enjoyable thanks to its state-of-the-art technological equipment, classrooms with audio-visual facilities, conference rooms, fully equipped simulation laboratories for applied learning, computer laboratories, cafeteria and recreational areas. The Health Sciences Library also located at Topkapı Health Sciences Campus provides Turkey’s most up-to-date and diverse collection of printed and digital resources in the field of nursing. The social clubs in our School support the social development of our students, who also participate in the wide range of cultural and social activities at Koç University’s Rumelifeneri Campus.

The school offers bachelor degree in nursing, and a variety of programs for Master of Science and PhD in nursing are running under KU Health Science Institute.

Students who successfully complete four years of education earn a Bachelor’s Degree. KUSON graduates have extensive work opportunities all over Turkey, as well as the opportunity to work abroad thanks to the wide range of abilities and qualifications they attain through their education, and can choose to apply to Master’s or PhD programs in Turkey or abroad.

Under the KUSON governance, Semahat Arsel Nursing Education and Research Center (SANERC), Faculty Boards and variety of Committees take place to achieve the goals of KUSON.
