Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in the Treatment of Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia

ResearchProf. Selçuk Peker and Assoc. Prof. M. Yavuz Samancı, Department of Neurosurgery, School of Medicine, published the results of Gamma Knife radiosurgery for the treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, which is difficult to diagnose and severely impairs the quality of life of patients, in Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain. Seven of the eight patients suffering from this condition, which causes severe pain as a result of abnormal stimulation of the glossopharyngeal nerve (the nerve that controls the tongue and throat area), experienced a reduction in pain after a median of 54.5 months, with no treatment-related side effects.
