Asst. Prof. Mehmet Cengiz Onbaşlı from our Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Physics Departments received this year’s TÜBİTAK Encouragement Award, which is given to young scientists who have proven that they can make significant contributions to science at an international level in the future with their work. With this current award received by Dr. Onbaşlı for his very successful research in electronics, micro and nanotechnologies, electromagnetic, optics and photonics, our University maintains its leading position with the highest number of TÜBİTAK Awards received since the inception of the program.
The Cure for Cancer May Be Hidden in Our Biological Clock
Prof. Halil Kavaklı and his team from the Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Molecular Biology and Genetics Departments succeeded in discovering a molecule that can delete from the cell one of the basic components of the biological clock which regulates the sleep cycle. Thanks to the molecule called M47, the cancer cells kill themselves and prevent the formation of cancer. Working to turn the molecule into a drug, the team made a breakthrough discovery that could cure about half of the known cancer types.
